Novel? Pshaw!
That's what the folks behind the National Novel Writing Month want me to believe, at least. During National Novel Writing Month, which is November, young writers* across the United States** grab their keyboards and network routers to compose and post an unedited, original novel onto the NaNoWrMo website. The ultimate goal is to have a finished story comprised of 50,000 words by November 30th, and per NaNoWrMo rules (though not heavily enforced) you may only start writing November 1st. That comes down to about 1000 words a day; not too much, actually.
I already have a half-baked novel idea, but it's pretty nascent and I'm sure the final novel would be notoriously vapid. I suppose that would have to be a compromise. Sigh. I haven't given up all hope for a half-decent story, though, because fan fiction is allowed, which would save me if I ever find that my current novel idea flops. Also, I'll probably spend the time I should be writing procrastinating and trying to restrain myself from editing my work, because I'm a known perfectionist when it comes to writing.
Gripes aside, though, I think this is a fabulous idea for me to write more fast. So share the pain and write with me, eh? I already convinced Mulan to join the dark side...
*When I tried (as is my custom) to enter in as my age *blank*teen years old -- to show I was a teenager but that I didn't want to disclose my precise age -- the website notified me that I could only enter in a number ranging from 13 to 130. I guess I'll have to conclude, then, that this isn't restricted to only teens.
**A friend in the UK informed me that she, too, could sign up, leading me to question the "National" aspect of this event. Clarify for me, anyone?
